General medicine is the branch of medicine which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the internal organs. Physicians practising such medicine deal only with adults and seek to treat illnesses with methods other than surgery.

General medicine covers a huge range of illnesses and diseases, thereby involving a number of areas which can give rise to claims in medical negligence. It includes many subspecialties such as Gastroenterology (stomach andintestines), Endocrinology (glands), Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Nephrology (kidneys), and rheumatology (bones and joints).
