We have also developed a niche Practice regarding the voice of the child in Care Proceedings. We represent the Court appointed Guardians ad Litem whose function is to ensure that the needs and welfare of the child and their views are taken into account by the Court. Professional support for many of the Guardians is provided by the children’s charity Barnardos and we advise Barnardos on their role and responsibilities to those Guardians. We advise on the rights of the child, when removed from his/her natural family by the State.

The circumstances of such removal may include alcohol, or drug abuse and/or mental health issues. The appointment of a Guardian ad Litem has a significant impact on the outcome for children and assists the Court in deciding what is in the best interests of the child. We advise Guardians ad Litem on Domestic and International Law and on Ireland’s obligation to adhere to European Conventions, including the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child 1989.

We advise the children’s charity Barnardos on all issues concerning children’s rights.
