Following the 1980 European Insolvency Directive, the Irish Government was committed to ensuring that all 'necessary measures' were taken to protect the interests of employees and former employees in the event of their employer's insolvency with respect to the protection of their pension entitlements. This is particularly relevant when one considers the current status of former Waterford Crystal employees where the company pension fund was found to be insolvent.
It is estimated that there are several hundred children living in Ireland born to surrogate mothers whose legal status is uncertain.

A jury in California has ordered DePuy to pay the sum of $8.3 million dollars in compensation to Loren Kransky after finding that the company defectively designed his ASR XL hip replacement device. Mr. Kransky was one of the thousands of people around the world who had received a DePuy ASR hip replacement system.

During the 2009/2010 Swine Flu (H1N1) pandemic in Europe, Pandemrix was widely used to vaccinate people including 900,000 people in Ireland. Following an increase in narcolepsy cases in children after receiving the Pandemrix vaccination, investigations were carried out by health agencies across Europe. The Department of Health carried out an investigation into the association between narcolepsy and Pandemrix and they found that there was a 13 fold increase in the risk of narcolepsy in vaccinated individuals compared with unvaccinated individuals.

The Plaintiff’s claim was for damages for personal injuries sustained by him on the 24th October 2008 whilst a patient in Tallaght Hospital for a routine colonoscopy procedure. During the course of the procedure the Plaintiff sustained a perforation of his colon.
