This matter came before Mr Justice Hogan in the High Court on the 21st of August this year by way of an appeal from the Circuit Court. Judge Heneghan in the Circuit Court had made an order in July 2013 dealing with the choice of school that one of the children of the parties should attend. Given that the new school year was pending, the matter was heard during the Court vacation.

A joint international conference organised by the Medical Injuries Alliance and UK charity AvMA and supported by Augustus Cullen Law took place in Dublin at the Morrison Hotel on the 4th November 2013 and was very well received. The Conference was entitled “Patients’ Rights, Access to Justice and The Case for Candour.”

On 26th November 2013, the High Court approved a settlement achieved by Augustus Cullen Law in a claim on behalf of a 12 year old girl who suffered from acute profound asphyxia during labour as a result of failure of the midwifery and obstetric staff at Portlaoise General Hospital to recognise the obvious signs of fetal distress demonstrated on the CTG trace.

An 8-year-old Cork girl with cerebral palsy who had sued a consultant obstetrician has further settled her case with a payment of damages for the next two years totalling €635,000.
