Our head of the medical negligence department Michael Boylan has been invited to present a paper to the conference dealing with recent maternity cases and outcomes, emerging trends in maternity claims, neurological birth injuries, proposed reforms in the method of awarding damages in such cases, periodic payment orders and possible reforms of the rules of court for dealing with such claims.
In addition Professor Chris Fitzpatrick Consultant Obstetrician of the Coombe Hospital will present a paper on “Challenges in maternity services, where we are and where we should be”.
Dr Rhona Mahony, Master of the National Maternity Hospital will present a paper on “Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act: An Update from a Medical Perspective”.
Professor Fergal Malone, Master of the Rotunda Hospital will present paper on “Fatal Foetal Abnormalities”.
Finally, Ms Paula Barry, Research Midwife of the Coombe Hospital will speak to the conference on the topic of “A Future without Fear – Managing Risk in Maternity Care”.
It is anticipated that this conference which gathers leading figures in the legal and maternity services in Ireland chaired by Judge McKechnie of the Supreme Court will provide valuable insights into the current legal trends and the challenges for medics in this high risk and challenging area of medicine.
